John Foxes Book of Martyrs is a monumental English Protestant account of the relentless persecutions endured by Protestants, many of whom sacrificed their lives for their faith. First published in 1563, this work is regarded as Britains largest publishing project of the time. This edition, significantly abridged from Foxes original, offers a riveting exploration into the reign of Queen Mary, during which ordinary Protestant Christians were publicly executed. Foxe presents the Church of England as the continuation of the authentic and faithful ancient church, not a new sect. The narrative unfolds the history of early Christian martyrs, the Inquisition, Wycliffe, and the Marian Persecutions. Recognized as a primary testament to the sufferings of devout Christian individuals at the hands of the anti-Protestant Roman Catholic authorities, this work is often viewed by Roman Catholics as a highly biased portrayal of the era, with Foxes accounts of the martyrdoms under Mary overlooking the intertwined political and religious aspects.
