For more than 160 years, Walt Whitmans novel Life and Adventures of Jack Engle, was lost in the shadows of history, overlooked and forgotten. Its existence was only hinted at in the scattered notes of Whitmans works studied by graduate student Zachary Turpin. The characters Covert, Wigglesworth, Smytthe, and Jack Engle were present, but no completed work with them had ever been discovered. After exhaustive research and countless hours scanning old newspaper pages, Turpin stumbled upon an advertisement for an upcoming serial that matched his notes. With this discovery, a hidden gem of literature was unearthed. Life and Adventures of Jack Engle is a captivating first-person narrative told by Jack Engle, reminiscent of a Dickensian tale set against the backdrop of New York City.
